  1. Prepare your serving glass (traditionally a large wine glass or modern coupe) by moistening the rim with a lemon wedge, then dipping it generously into superfine sugar to create a thick, 'crusted' rim.
  2. Carefully place a very long, wide strip of lemon peel (peeled from a whole lemon if possible) into the prepared glass, coiling it elegantly around the inside.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine the brandy, dry orange curaçao, maraschino liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and Angostura bitters (if using) with ice.
  4. Shake vigorously until well-chilled.
  5. Carefully strain the mixture into the prepared glass, being mindful not to disturb the sugar rim or the lemon peel.
  6. Serve immediately.
