Cocktail Recipe App With Ingredients

Find cocktails you can make with bottles you already own. Smart ingredient matching, 87 classics + community recipes, and a free shuffle button. No paywall.

You're standing in front of your home bar on a Friday evening. There's bourbon, sweet vermouth, a bottle of Campari, some bitters, and a half-used bag of limes. You could make... something. But what?

Home Bar Hero answers that question instantly. Tell the app what you have, and it shows you every cocktail you can make right now -- sorted by readiness, filtered by what's actually on your shelf. No scrolling through recipes you can't make. No guessing whether you have the right ingredients. Just cocktails, matched to your bar, ready to pour.

And unlike Mixel ($11.99) or Cocktail Flow ($20/year), every recipe in Home Bar Hero is free.

How Smart Recipe Matching Works

Most cocktail apps give you a search bar and a recipe database. You type "Old Fashioned," and they show you a recipe. But that's not the question most home bartenders are actually asking. The real question is: "What can I make with what I have?"

Home Bar Hero's matching algorithm works backward from your inventory.

Step 1: Build Your Inventory

Add your bottles using AI photo scanning (up to 10 bottles per photo), barcode scanning, or manual search across 600+ brands. Then add your mixers, juices, syrups, and garnishes through the Kitchen Staples quick-add section.

Step 2: Ingredient Hierarchy Expands Your Reach

This is where Home Bar Hero's matching gets genuinely smart. The app uses an 8-family spirit hierarchy with sub-types, which means owning one bottle can unlock recipes across an entire category.

Own a bottle of Maker's Mark? That's bourbon, which maps to the whiskey family. Suddenly you can make:

This hierarchy covers every spirit family -- rum, gin, vodka, tequila, whiskey, brandy, and more -- with dozens of sub-types. Your bar unlocks far more recipes than a simple one-to-one ingredient match would suggest.

Step 3: Real-Time Matching Across Every Recipe

The moment your inventory changes, the matching algorithm recalculates. For every recipe in the library -- 87 curated classics, your custom creations, and community-shared recipes -- the app determines:

Step 4: Sorted by What You Can Actually Pour

When you open the Recipes screen, cocktails aren't listed alphabetically or by popularity. They're sorted by availability:

  1. Favorites first -- your bookmarked recipes at the top
  2. Can Make -- cocktails you can pour right now
  3. Almost Can Make -- sorted by readiness percentage
  4. Everything else -- progressively less available

This means the top of your recipe list is always actionable. No scrolling past 50 cocktails you can't make to find the three you can.

87 Curated Classics + Unlimited Custom and Community Recipes

Home Bar Hero's recipe library has three layers, all searchable from one screen:

Curated Classics (87 Recipes)

Hand-selected cocktails covering the essentials and the interesting -- from a Daiquiri to a Last Word, from a Negroni to a Penicillin. Each recipe includes precise measurements, numbered instructions, glass type, and tags for flavor profiles and occasions. These are always available, always free.

Your Custom Cocktails

Create your own recipes with the full recipe editor: name, description, glass type, ingredients with amounts and units, step-by-step instructions, and a photo (uploaded or AI-generated). Custom cocktails are matched against your inventory just like the curated classics.

Community Recipes

Browse cocktails shared by other Home Bar Hero users. Community recipes show ratings, toast counts, save counts, and view counts so you can find crowd favorites. Save community recipes to your personal list, rate them, and leave comments.

All three recipe sources are merged into a single browsable, searchable, filterable list. Four tabs let you narrow your view: All, Saved, Shared (Community), and My Shared.

Ready for Tonight: Your Instant Cocktail Picker

Can't decide what to make? The Ready for Tonight feature on your Home screen shows three random cocktails you can make with what you have right now. Tap shuffle for three new picks.

It's the "I'm Feeling Lucky" of cocktail apps -- except every result is guaranteed to be something you can actually make tonight with the bottles on your shelf.

How Home Bar Hero Compares to Other Cocktail Apps

The cocktail app market has a paywall problem. Here's how the recipe experience stacks up:

Mixel -- $11.99

Mixel has the largest recipe database (2,500+), but the majority of recipes are locked behind its one-time purchase price. The free version is essentially a demo. No AI features. No community recipes. Ingredient matching is basic -- no hierarchy system.

Cocktail Flow -- $20/Year

Cocktail Flow runs video ads before every recipe in the free tier. The subscription removes ads and unlocks premium content. No multi-bottle scanning. No AI bartender. No recipe sharing community.

Home Bar Hero -- Free

Every recipe is free. AI bottle scanning is included. Ingredient hierarchy matching means your bar unlocks more recipes. Community recipes expand the library continuously. The AI bartender can generate custom recipes on demand. No ads. No paywall. No "premium" recipes behind a subscription.

Beyond Matching: Features That Make Recipes Better

AI Recipe Search

Looking for a specific cocktail that's not in the curated library? Type the name into AI Search, and Gemini generates the full recipe -- ingredients, measurements, instructions, glass type, and tags. The recipe is cached so the next person who searches for it gets it instantly at no credit cost.

Menu Scanning

Photograph a cocktail menu at any bar or restaurant, and AI extracts every recipe. Save them to your collection and see which ones you can make at home. One photo captures an entire menu.

Cocktail Twists

Found a recipe you love but want to swap the gin for mezcal? Use "Make a Twist" to create a variation while keeping the full lineage tracked. Your twist links back to the original, creating a family tree of recipe evolution.

Smart Buy Recommendations

The AI analyzes every recipe you're one or two ingredients away from making, then identifies the single bottle purchase that would unlock the most new cocktails. Instead of guessing what to buy next, you get a data-driven recommendation with specific brand examples.

Searching and Filtering Your Recipes

The recipe search bar supports multiple search types:

Sixty-one unique tags cover spirit types, flavor profiles (citrus, fruity, spicy, herbal), preparation methods (shaken, stirred, muddled), and occasions (classic, modern classic, after-dinner, brunch). Filter from broad ("whiskey cocktails") to specific ("stirred, bitter, after-dinner whiskey cocktails").

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the "almost can make" matching work?

The algorithm counts required (non-optional, non-garnish) missing ingredients for every recipe. Cocktails with zero missing ingredients are "Can Make." Cocktails with exactly one missing ingredient are "Almost Can Make" or "One Away." Everything else shows a readiness percentage based on how many required ingredients you have versus how many the recipe needs.

Can I create my own cocktail recipes?

Yes. The manual recipe editor lets you build custom cocktails with full ingredient lists, measurements, step-by-step instructions, glass types, tags, and photos. Your custom cocktails are matched against your inventory just like the curated classics, and you can share them to the community.

Is there a limit on how many recipes I can save?

Free accounts can save up to 10 cocktails (custom plus saved community recipes combined). Top Shelf and Founder accounts have unlimited saves. Browsing and viewing recipes is always free with no limits.

Does the ingredient matching understand substitutions?

Yes, through the ingredient hierarchy system. Bourbon counts as whiskey, which means a bourbon bottle unlocks bourbon-specific and general whiskey recipes. This hierarchy covers 8 spirit families with dozens of sub-types, so your bar is almost certainly more capable than a simple name-match would suggest.

What's the difference between curated, custom, and community recipes?

Curated recipes are the 87 hand-selected classics that ship with the app. Custom recipes are ones you create yourself. Community recipes are shared by other users and include ratings, comments, and social stats. All three types appear together in the Recipes screen, all matched against your inventory.

Your Bar Is Better Than You Think

Most people have bottles sitting on their shelf that unlock dozens of recipes they don't know about. Home Bar Hero's smart matching closes that gap -- showing you exactly what you can make, what you're one bottle away from, and what to buy next.

No paywall. No subscription. No ads. Just recipes matched to your bar.
