Smart Buy: AI Tells You What Bottle to Buy Next

Stop guessing what to buy for your home bar. Smart Buy analyzes your bottles and tells you exactly which single purchase unlocks the most new cocktail recipes.

You're standing in the liquor store, staring at 200 bottles, and you have no idea which one will actually be useful. You already own bourbon, gin, and triple sec. Should you grab mezcal? Campari? Chartreuse? Which single bottle unlocks the most new cocktails from what you already have?

That's the question Smart Buy answers -- instantly, and for free.

Home Bar Hero's Smart Buy algorithm looks at every recipe you're one or two ingredients away from making, then ranks the missing ingredients by how many new cocktails each one would unlock. It tells you the single best bottle to buy, shows you example brands, and lists exactly which recipes you'll be able to make once you bring it home.

No more guessing. No more impulse buys that collect dust. Just data-driven recommendations that make your bar work harder.

How Smart Buy Works

Smart Buy isn't a generic "every home bar needs these 10 bottles" list. It's personalized to your exact inventory, updated every time you add or remove a bottle.

Step 1: Your Bar Gets Analyzed

When you open Home Bar Hero, the app already knows every bottle in your collection. You've added them by scanning your shelf with AI photo identification (up to 10 bottles per photo), scanning barcodes, or searching from 600+ brands. Smart Buy starts from this real inventory.

Step 2: The Algorithm Finds Your Gaps

The AI examines every cocktail recipe in the database -- 87 curated classics plus community-shared recipes -- and identifies which ones you're close to making but can't yet. It specifically looks for recipes where you're missing just one or two ingredients.

Here's where it gets clever: Home Bar Hero uses an ingredient hierarchy system. If you own bourbon, the app knows you can make any recipe that calls for whiskey. Rye works for whiskey cocktails too. This hierarchy means the algorithm accurately counts what you can really make, not just exact-match recipes.

Step 3: Missing Ingredients Get Ranked

Every missing ingredient gets scored by one metric: how many new recipes would it unlock? If adding sweet vermouth would let you make 8 new cocktails, but adding absinthe would unlock 2, sweet vermouth ranks higher. Simple.

Step 4: You Get 3 Recommendations

Smart Buy surfaces the top 3 bottle recommendations, each showing:

Step 5: One Tap to Shopping List or Bar

Found the recommendation compelling? Tap "+ List" to add it to your integrated shopping list, or "+ Bar" if you already own it and just haven't added it yet. The shopping list is type-aware -- when you check off a spirit at the store, it prompts you to select the specific brand you bought before adding it to your bar.

Why Smart Buy Beats Generic Buying Guides

Every "how to stock a home bar" article gives you the same list: vodka, gin, rum, bourbon, tequila, triple sec. That's fine if you're starting from zero. But what if you already have 8 bottles? Or 15? Or 30?

Generic guides can't account for what you already own. Smart Buy can.

It's Personal to Your Inventory

Two users with different bars get completely different recommendations. If you already own Campari and gin but not sweet vermouth, Smart Buy knows a bottle of sweet vermouth unlocks a Negroni, a Manhattan (you've got bourbon too), and a Boulevardier. Someone who already has sweet vermouth won't see that recommendation at all.

It Maximizes Your Return on Investment

Every bottle recommendation is optimized for the maximum number of new recipes. Smart Buy doesn't recommend a $60 bottle of Chartreuse if it only unlocks one cocktail for you. It finds the bottle that gives you the biggest jump in what you can make.

It Factors in What You Probably Have

The algorithm accounts for household staples -- lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, sugar, club soda. These are ingredients most people have in their kitchen. So when Smart Buy counts recipes a new bottle would unlock, it's factoring in those kitchen staples you likely already have but haven't added to the app.

AI Picked For You: Discover Cocktails You've Never Heard Of

Smart Buy's partner feature is Undiscovered Recipes (AI Picked For You), and it solves a different problem: you have bottles, you know you can make cocktails, but you keep making the same three drinks.

AI Picked For You uses Gemini AI to suggest 9 lesser-known cocktails that you can make right now with what's already in your bar. These aren't the usual Old Fashioned and Margarita suggestions. The AI specifically seeks out creative, obscure, and underappreciated recipes that match your inventory.

How Undiscovered Recipes Works

  1. AI reads your bar -- It knows every bottle you own
  2. It generates 9 suggestions -- Lesser-known cocktails you can make right now
  3. Each comes with context -- The cocktail name, a description, and the AI's reasoning for why you'd like it
  4. Tap to discover -- Get the full recipe with ingredients and instructions
  5. Save the ones you like -- They join your personal collection with an AI-generated image

The suggestions exclude cocktails you've already saved and recipes already in the system, so you're always discovering something genuinely new.

Refresh When You're Ready

Picked For You refreshes on a cooldown timer. Free users get a new set every 2 days. Top Shelf members refresh every 6 hours. Founders get unlimited refreshes. Each refresh costs 1 AI credit from your weekly allocation (20 free credits per week, resetting every Wednesday at 5pm Central).

Real Example: How Smart Buy Builds a Bar

Let's say you start with the basics: vodka, gin, bourbon, white rum, and tequila blanco.

Week 1 -- Smart Buy recommends: Sweet Vermouth Brands: Carpano Antica Formula, Dolin Rouge. Unlocks: Manhattan, Negroni (once you add Campari), Rob Roy, and more. The "+8" badge shows 8 new recipes.

Week 2 -- You add sweet vermouth. Smart Buy updates: Campari Brands: Campari (it's the only one). Unlocks: Negroni, Boulevardier, Jungle Bird, Americano. "+6" badge.

Week 3 -- You add Campari. Smart Buy updates: Dry Vermouth Brands: Dolin Dry, Noilly Prat. Unlocks: Classic Martini, Vesper variations, and more.

Each recommendation builds on the last. Your bar evolves strategically instead of randomly.

The Home Bar Hero AI Credit System

Smart Buy and AI Picked For You both run on Home Bar Hero's AI credit system. Here's how it works:

Once a recommendation is generated, it's cached -- you can revisit it anytime without spending additional credits. And here's a detail worth knowing: cached recipe discoveries are free for everyone. If another user already discovered the same cocktail, you get that recipe at no credit cost. The community funds the knowledge base together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Smart Buy know which bottle unlocks the most recipes?

The algorithm examines every recipe in Home Bar Hero's database and identifies which ones you're 1-2 ingredients away from making. It then counts how many recipes each missing ingredient would unlock and ranks them. The ingredient hierarchy system (bourbon counts as whiskey, etc.) ensures accurate matching across spirit categories.

Is Smart Buy free?

Yes. Smart Buy is available to all users. It uses AI credits (20 free per week), with a 2-day cooldown between refreshes on the free tier. There's no paywall or premium lock on the feature itself.

What if I don't agree with a recommendation?

Smart Buy optimizes purely for recipe unlock count. If you don't drink a particular spirit category, that's fine -- just skip it and check the other two recommendations. Each refresh gives you 3 options to choose from, and the next refresh will surface different suggestions.

Does Smart Buy work with a small bar?

Smart Buy activates once you have at least 3 spirits and 3 craftable recipes in your bar. Before that threshold, you'll see a locked teaser showing what you need to unlock it. Even with a small bar, the recommendations are valuable -- they show you exactly which bottle purchase will have the biggest impact.

How is this different from generic "home bar essentials" lists?

Generic lists recommend the same bottles to everyone regardless of what they already own. Smart Buy analyzes your specific inventory and finds the gaps that matter most. Two users with different bars will get completely different recommendations. It's the difference between "buy vodka" and "buy Campari because it unlocks 6 new recipes from the bottles you already have."

Stop Guessing, Start Building

Every bottle you buy should earn its spot on your shelf. Smart Buy makes sure it does -- by analyzing your bar, crunching the recipes, and pointing you to the single purchase that unlocks the most new cocktails.

Your bar is probably better than you think. Let Smart Buy show you what's one bottle away.
